Last week, the International Institute for Species Exploration announced ten new species that have been discovered, ranging from a "shocking pink millipede" to a giant "duck-billed dinosaur." The list includes a new species of mushroom, Xerocomus silwoodensis, named after Silwood Campus on Imperial College in London.
Xerocomus is a genus of fungi similar to boletes and is listed with other Boletus, Boletellus, Leccinum, Tylopilus in many field guides. On the undersides of the caps they have pores (small holes) instead of gills (appear like creases). Many boletes are considered choice edibles... no word yet on this new species, though I can imagine the temptation of those that discovered it.
You can check out the entire Top 10 here. Thanks to Fran for sending this my way!
