Common Name: "The Blusher"
I photographed this Blusher at Mass Audubon's Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary in Belmont, MA, in July, 2003. That particular summer there were a slew of these popping up throughout the sanctuary, some as large as my outstretched hand.
Note the pinkish tint that bears out its common name. In fact, much of the mushroom becomes red/pink when bruised. Notice the small "patches" adorning the cap... a key identifier of Amanitas. These patches are the remains of a universal veil tissue that encloses the mushroom at its early developmental stage. Remember those red mushrooms that you always found/find in children's books? Those white patches on top? Another type of Amanita.
You can get a lot of good info about the Blusher here on the Mushroom Expert website (one of the first places I visit when researching my finds). You can also find a higher quality version of my photo here.
